How September Retail Sales Stole August’s Thunder


September’s strong sales might simply be making up for a weak August.

The Commerce Department on Friday reported that retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 1.9% in September from a month earlier, easily besting economists’ expectations for a 0.7% gain. It was also a step up from August’s disappointing 0.6% gain.
